This is my favorite.
The Vigeland Park is the world’s largest sculpture park made by a single artist, Gustav Vigeland, with more than 200 sculptures in bronze, granite and wrought iron. The park is considered his life’s work.
A friend of mine had recommended I see it while I was out walking. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, it was dark by the time I got there (4:00pm). And freezing cold. But this didn’t stop me from taking pictures of way too many favorites before I wandered on in search of something warm.
The sculptures are meant to represent different stages of life. They were all exquisite.
Any in particular strike your fancy?
Not for me I’m afraid, even though I’m sure they are by talented hands and I’m in awe of the countless hours they must have taken to create.
Some of the pieces were so moving. It’s hard for me to imagine how the artist captured emotion in stone. I’d love to go back during the day and see them again.
I wish I could appreciate art generally, but I just can’t. Same with poetry. I know the best of it can move people greatly.
Your favorite also resonated with me. There’s something so freeing about the pose that the sculpture woman is in. It must have been such a good experience to see these in person! Photos are hard to do sculptures justice, I think.
That’s exactly the word this sculpture embodied to me: free.
I think you probably were lucky to see the sculptures at night. They certainly look very dramatic lit up against the darkness like that.
